not that you should put any weight to what I say... but I would keep both. Try to cross pollinate. Perhaps keep Substack more "approachable" as in less paywall, and the Patreon as more "commercial" while still being able to offer courses or streaming stuff in both... if any of that makes sense. Of course I don't know. I dont bother because it would just depress me that no one wanted to pay me, lol
Hi Chris. This is a very good plan. Although I think the way that I’m doing my Patreon because I’m still figuring out what people want what I want to create and all of that kind of thing I think actually sort of falls into the down to the honest and more approachable to at the moment. So I think perhaps bring it over to Substack would be sensible.
I wonder if I can pause my Patreon and potentially set it up when I’ve got more in the way of courses and things if I go down that route. But naturally for slightly more low key videos and chatting perhaps this is actually the place to be!
I do agree it’s good to be in more than one place though and cross nation is really good reminder. I need to brainstorm about it all.
Hi! I'm new to you but I love a variety of content within an account. After all, you're not just one thing, right? Nothing bores me more than people who stick to one topic stream. I inevitably unsubscribe/unfollow after a few weeks. I don't want to read the same thing over and over - even if it's said differently. But that's my two cents. It's your Substack - do whatever feels right to you.
Ah thank you so much! That’s a great permission slip to just do what I want!! We have an allotment and I love running and I considered writing something about those but thought maybe I should stick to what I do for work, but thank you for inviting that in!
I also think a variety of media / formats is nice to play with!
I think do whatever feels right is brilliant advice, thank you!!
Hi! Just thought I'd throw in my thoughts, honestly I love a combination blog, I think it really helps readers get a better understanding of the practice and the artist :) I've been toying with the idea of Patreon, but I've really gotten to love Substack and have combined it with my email list so it's kind of a 2 in 1 for updates, process videos and everything in between!
Ah thank you so much, I very much appreciate those thrown in thoughts!
I think combination blog is where I’ll end up, I think it gives you more flexibility and also allows people to consume what they enjoy or can manage (sometimes I prefer to read, sometimes I prefer to listen or watch, depending what I’m doing).
I think there is so much you can do on substack now that if you’re already here and doing it then maybe that’s the answer! It’s funny because had this bock with Patreon, but have so many ideas and thoughts for substack. It feels easier to share on here practically and the platform just seems more user friendly to me.
It’s always so hard to know isn’t it but I think go with what you’re enjoying and you’ll do your best work! 🎉✨
Yes, I think prioritising the fun part is important, it starts to feel like an interactive diary, especially when sharing the works-in-progress and personal thoughts. I also really like the fact that there isn't necessarily a schedule you're tied to like Patreon, so if you choose to paywall posts, they're kind of always there for readers to enjoy and adds value to the subscription, it doesn't necessarily mean you need to be posting consistently on a fixed schedule (even though I try to at least post once or twice a month).
But also, trial and error is always the best thing to understand what works for you and your readers!
Yes I totally get that. I think the pressure of a schedule is not cool. It feels very jarring to what should be a creative process. I would like to think I would post fairly consistently because of having ideas and be inspired to share, but when it comes from a place of feeling like you have to it’s very different!
I’m looking forward to experimenting a bit. I keep nearly sharing things and thinking ‘is that right, maybe I should hold off until next week to spread it out’, but I think there is a lot to be said for Hong with what you feel isn’t there!
Definitely! Haha I know what you mean, creativity and inspiration tend to come in bursts and you need such a high level of control to not blurt it all out at once out of excitement - trying to be the leaf and spreading the content out, which is hard but it does make more sense! And to a certain extent helps to get a conversation going because it's much more focused I guess :)
I've started to keep these ideas 'that should be given a post' in my drafts and let them simmer a bit (sometimes) just to see if it's something that can be spread over multiple posts and in some cases turns into a mini series almost...some of them never see the light of day to be fair but that is also my brain telling me that it is not good enough or sometimes it feels too personal to share.
The experimentation is such fun, though, I feel like it's a never-ending cycle of that: understanding what people want to read, but making sure you're enjoying what you're writing as well is important. I guess it really is an extension of our work!
Yes I love the sound of that! I think keeping them in draft is very sensible and you often are able to refine them aren’t you. I also think the scheduling tool is helpful because you could actually just write posts and schedule them and then change that around if you want to.
It’s a privileged position to have too many ideas, isn’t it! Or too much to say!
It has made me wonder if writers ever worry about running out of things to say. Because I feel like I’ve got lots that I want to get out of my brain, but I don’t know if that’s a thing that people ever struggle with.
Either way, as long as I’m enjoying it, I’m happy for now! Love having these kind of conversations, thank you so much for getting involved 💛
Don’t pigeon hole yourself into one area of who you are. Check out Charlene Lutz here on Substack. She’s an artist, plus so much more, that I follow. She shows her art, shares poetry, does paint alongs, etc.
Oo amazing, thank you so much for sharing that, I will go and check Charlene out. I so agree not pigeonholing yourself is a good idea and I guess it's doing what you feel drawn to will probably create the most interesting / exciting / engaging pieces anyway!
Ah thank you so much Anesha! I’ve had some requests for shorter videos, maybe half an hour max. to make it accessible and quick to just have a go which I look forward to creating amongst other things!
Sharing a journey definitely helps me as I'm still undecided about where and how to progress. I am some steps behind but this could be a future post of mine. Don't think that helps you decide but I like Substack and the flexibility. I think the platform could be dramatically improved behind the paywall ( like a paying subscribers area) . There is too much difference between the app version and the desktop version in my opinion.
Thank you so much for your thoughts, Carl. I really appreciate you taking the time to share. It’s like you read my mind because I’m halfway through writing a post about my journey. I really agree I find it really helpful reading other peoples journeys and having that reminder that everybody is different But everybody navigate struggle and that you can do it too!!
That’s really interesting feedback. Thank you for that. So far, I’m enjoying it on Substack and I think perhaps it will continue to improve.
Amazing. Thanks for that. I thought I wonder if it’s one of those things where I get penalised for mentioning another Platform’s name let alone putting themselves up against each other.😂

plus I already enjoy substack over patreon 😂

Thank you for sharing! I guess all we can do is take it one post at a time and see how it all unfolds 🌸
Nice post. Thanks for sharing :)
You are so welcome. It's good to get some thoughts out there and have conversations around things rather than gong round in my head!
I appreciate you reading and leaving a comment, thank you!

I like all that you have written. I would join along with everything, if I had the time.

I'm not on Patreon.

Leaving a comment before even reading the article because your subtitle made me lol 😂 thank you for that
